Regulators Probe George Santos Over Suspicious Prediction Market Trading
Federal investigators are examining former Congressman George Santos for allegedly trading prediction market contracts tied to his own political activities. The probe centers on a Kalshi contract that speculated whether Santos would attend the 2024 State of the Union address—a bet prosecutors claim he placed against his own participation.
Kalshi flagged the irregular activity to the CFTC and DOJ in February after detecting Santos' purported wager. The ex-lawmaker, expelled from Congress in 2023 and later pardoned by former President Trump, denies wrongdoing. "This allegation is absurd," Santos stated on X, adding his legal team is cooperating with authorities.
The case highlights growing regulatory scrutiny of prediction markets, which have gained traction among crypto traders as quasi-derivative instruments. While no digital assets were directly involved, the incident underscores the blurred lines between political event speculation and financial markets.
